EDINBURGH.—EMPIRE PALACE, LIMITED (Managing director, Mr. H. E. Moss).—The Cinematographe, under the direction of Mons. Trewey, has proved an unqualified success, the various pictures being perfectly reproduced on the screen—the movements of the people, the splashing of the waves, etc., being wonderfully realistic. Everyone who has seen it speaks very highly of this new invention, and it will undoubtedly prove one of the draws of the season while it is here. In addition to the above there is the usual good supply of varieties. The Sisters Leslie continue their high-class duets, which are well rendered. The Burnells, in their funny business, also are going well and strong ; while the acrobatic feats of Tackley and Fratelli are causing nightly rounds of applause. J. B. Preston is a good broad Scotch comedian, with a little bit of dancing interspersed. Other four turns are filled in, and make up a pleasant evening.Music Hall and

Le journal londonien The Era offre quelques compléments d'information :
EMPIRE PALACE.-Managing Director, Mr H. E. Moss.-Lumière's cinematographer from the Empire Theatre, London, drew a crowded house on Monday, and roused an amount of enthusiasm fully in proportion to the wonderful merits of this unrivalled invention, which may be described as a perfect and continuous photographic feast. Each successive picture was hailed with loudly expressed delight, the ensemble and general management being faultless; and Mr Moss and Mr Trewey, who brings the show, are to be heartily congratulated on the success of their enterprise.

EDINBURGH.—EMPIRE PALACE, LIMITED (Managing director Mr. H. E. Moss). The Cinematographe, under the management of Messrs. Trewey, proved such an exceptional attraction last week, that it has been retained for this week. It is certainly the most gigantic draw we have had here for a very long time, every seat, and every box, being occupied nightly. Several of the best scenes have to be repeated, such as the " Arrival of the Paris Express," "Bathing in the Mediterranean," " The Falling of a Wall," etc. It is truly a most wonderful invention, and should be seen by all who have the opportunity of witnessing it. Besides above, there is quite an interesting sries of ordinary turns.

THE LUMIERE CINEMATOGRAPHE.—This very pleasing and marvellous exhibition is in its fourth and last week. This Friday night the exhibition will be closed. I have visited it several times. and. without exception, I have been delighted at every visit. I regret very much that one of the weeks of exhibition the charge for admission was not reduced to sixpence. Yon will he pleased to learn that the accident to Mr. Vernon, the lecturer, was only a very slight affair, and left nothing serious ; I was, however, very anxious. I want Low to thank Mr. Vernon for his marked and continuous kindness to me when I have visited his exhibition as your representative ; also Mr. Hutton. his assistant, who has been equally kind to me. Madame Trewey I especially thank. If all exhibitors and entertainers would be as kind as these three have been to me, critics and representatives would never have cause to complain. So long, however, as I continue your critic and representative, no matter what be my reception, my work shall be fairly done.

L'American Biograph (Empire Theatre, <25->28 mai 1897)
En mai, l'American Biograph projette quelques vues animées à l'Empire Theatre :
THE EDINBURGH THEATRES.
[...]
The American biograph, which is an improvement on the cinematographe, proved a great attraction at the Empire Theatre. It represents living pictures with a vividness and realism that simply astonished the audience. The two views of Niagara and the Empire Express are wonderful productions.
Glasgow Herald, Glasgow, mardi 25 mai 1897, p. 7.
Un autre journal offre quelques informations complémentaires :
EDINBURGH EMPIRE THEATRE
Tho outstanding feature of the programme at the Empire Palace Theatre this week is the American Biograph, invented by Mr Herman Casler, of New York, As compared with the advance with the cinematograph this invention marks a distinct advance in instantaneous picture photography. The pictures produced last night were given life size, and included a wonderful reproduction of a fire brigade at full speed, a representation of the Pennsylvania express dashing down a mountain decline, a pillow fight, and other humorous scenes. Doubtless large crowds will be attracted to witness the invention during the remainder of the week.

WOMEN'S COLUMN.
DRESSES FOR THE PANTOMIME
"SLEEPING BEAUTY."
The dresses for "Sleeping Beauty," the pantomime to be produced on Saturday night at the Theatre-Royal, designed by Robert Crafter, Have been for the most part carried out by Messrs Hugo Brand & Co. and Messrs Elkin, but many of them have been made by Mrs Smyth and her assistants in Edinburgh, in the ward-robe rooms of the Lyceum Theatre. Without exception they are beautiful.
One of the features of the pantomime will be Messrs Phil and Barnard's cinematograph of the Jubilee procession, in realistic colours, with which the performance will conclude.

THE ANALYTICON IN QUEEN STREET HALL.
The Analyticon, which is being shown for a short season in Queen Street Hall, Edinburgh, ranks high as one of the novelties of the season. What the stereoscope has done for the ordinary photograph, the Analyticon succeeds doing for lime-light views, and in place of the flat representation which is obviously a picture there can now be by means of this discovery touch of realism added to every view. Lions, tigers, hippopotami statuary South Kensington, chapels in Canterbury Cathedral, and other subjects shown on the screen stand out when seen through the analysers provided with startling vividness. Perhaps the best effect of all was obtained with a photograph of trees in full bloom, where the spectator seemed to be looking, away through the stems of the trees. The entertainment provided by the Modern Marvel Company, Limited, also includes the cinematograph, and several series of interesting pictures were shown, particularly the coloured sun, moon, and stars dance, by a French danseuse. At intervals a number of beautiful ordinary lime-light views, illustrative of the works Shakespeare, were shown. Mr. T. J. West made an admirable raconteur, but gave his audience little credit for any knowledge they possessed of the writings of Shakespeare.

M. Doyen, Paris, demonstrated with special instruments operations about the hip joint. He also exhibited a cinematograph showing the operations, each of them lasting several minutes. The various stages of the operation were easily followed and every movement and gesture of the operator and those about him was distinctly seen. At the conclusion of the demonstration, Professor Chiene moved a vote of thanks to M. Doyen.

L'Eventograph de Charles W. Poole (Cooke's Circus, 22->22 août 1898)
POOLE'S MYRIORAMA IN EDINBURGH.
There was a large attendance at Cooke's Circus last night to witness the initial performance of Charles W. Poole's Myriorama, which will make a short stay in Edinburgh. The whole programme is of a very attractive character, and it was evident that the entertainment met with high appreciation. The chief event was, of course, the excellent series of panoramic views, including subjects from all parts of the world, and many of them very much up-to-date and realistic. There were, for instance, representations of incidents and scenes in connection with the charge at Dargai, tho destruction of the cruiser Maine, the bombardment Manila, Klondyke, and Nansen's Arctic explorations. The eventograph, or "improved cinematograph," was also brought into use, and some most comical pictures were capitally reproduced. In addition to these attractions, several variety performances were introduced at intervals, and in spite of stage limitations, the acrobats and others were able to get through some clever movements. One of the best feats was the balancing of "Great Scott" on a high, unsupported ladder; while standing at the top he did some clever juggling tricks. Mr Harry Stewart, protean artiste, was very successful in his line; Orville Pitcher gave some good negro representations; Miss Daisy Graham sang pleasingly; and there were also meritorious gymnastic and acrobatic displays.

POOLE'S MYRIORAMA AT COOKE'S CIRCUS.
After an absence of about a year, Poole's Myriorama opened at Cooke's Circus last night for a short season. Although the entertainment, in its more essential features, is similar to that which has become familiar in Edinburgh, several new attractions have been introduced, and the programme brought up to date by not unrealistic representations of such comparatively recent events as the charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman, the taking of Dargai heights by the Gordons, and the entry of President Kruger into Blomfontein to meet Sir Alfred Milner. Agreeable variety was provided by several smart variety "turns" at intervals in the Myriorama. The Clifton Brothers gave a comical sketch. Gros M'Cart's dogs showed wonderful intelligence, Mephisto gained applause by his contortions, Fred Charles proved that laughing is contagious, and the "3 Woodbee" provided a bizarre and amusing "turn ." Mention may also be made of Carl Renbart in "Masks and Faces," a clever piece of character representation, Tissot "living marionettes," and an eventographe exhibition. There was a well filled house.

CHARLES W. POOLE'S MYRIORAMA.
Mr Charles W. Poole's No. 1 Myriorama entered upon a short season at Cooke's Circus last night. The exhibition is similar to that given by the No. 2 company which visited Edinburgh last year, and the standard of excellence has been more than maintained. The audience is taken on a grand tour round the world, and the principal cities and attractions are faithfully portrayed in beautiful tableaux. The main events of the Boer war are also produced, including the surrender of Cronje and the battle of Spion Kop. The display of numerous up-to-date pictures by the eventographe and the performance by a company of variety artistes, also contribute to the success of what is at once an interesting and instructive entertainment. There was a large audience.

THE MODERN MARVEL COMPANTS ANIMATES PICTURES.
The Modem Marvel Company, under the direction of Mr T. J. West, began a short season in the Queen's Hall yesterday with an entertainment which should prove a strong attraction for holiday-makers. This is the eighth visit which the company has paid to Edinburgh at this period of the year with an exhibition of animated pictures, and on each occasion there has been some fresh development of the wonders of the cinematograph and some striking novelty produced. What is shown this year, however, surpasses anything that has been seen here before in this line of entertainment, not only because of the beautiful series of views presented, but because they are fresh and up-to-date, and combine originality with remarkably realistic effects. The most startling picture very accurately described as alike sensational and fantastic, is "A Trip to the Sun," in which members or the Eccentric Club set out to explore the universe and celestial sphere in automobile, airship, and submarine. Their experiences would have gladdened the heart of Jules Verne, for they skip across mountains , travel through the clouds, passing the planets on their way, collide with the sun, when their tram is wrecked, are nearly burnt up by eruptions, from which they take rescue in an icy shelter, afterwards explore the bottom of the sea in a submarine, on which there is an explosion, and are finally cast on shore, and make a triumphal return home from their thrilling adventures. The story is told very vividly and picturesquely in thirty-five scenes by beautifully coloured cinematograms, and the wonderful effects produced were warmly applauded. The arrangement is the conception of a Frenchman, and it has been very cleverly worked out . Another interesting series is the representation of the great Toronto fire, in which the destruction of a great part of the city with numerous incidents connected with the disaster was impressively depicted. A trip to Jaffa and Jerusalem, arranged in a series of thirty panoramic views, gives the spectator a glimpse of some of the most fascinating sights that are to be seen in the Holy Land. Another tour takes one through the principal cities in Italy, beginning with Genoa, taking in Venice, Rome, and Naples, and winding up with Vesuvius. Tho operations at the salving of the ill-fated Submarine A1, and the imposing funeral of the victims, are graphically illustrated, and a variety of miscellaneous views complete an entertainment which is full of interest, instruction, and amusement. During intervals in the cinematograph display songs are rendered by Mr W. H. Goodrich and Mr W. M. Earle[r] of the Fish Jubilee Singers, and by Mr David Reid, a Scottish vocalist.

MODERN MARVEL COMPANY.
The Modern Marvel Company, under direction of Mr T. J. West, is well-known the lover of animated picture exhibitions, who will welcome a return visit of the entertainment to the city. A commencement was made yesterday in the Queen's Hall, with a programme which combines the humorous, the instructive, and the pictorial in a very attractive way. A particularly interesting set of films was that showing the cutting of ice blocks and their transport from Norway to England, and another good group was the collection illustrating the great marble quarries of Carrara and the sculpturing of the stone. Animated colour pictures were an agreeable diversion, and the spectacle wound up with "The Realm Santa Claus." Santa is first shown at home making his toys, then there are scenes illustrating Christmas Eve in the family circle, the hanging up of the stocking, the youngsters frolics in their bedroom before they go to sleep, the journey of Santa Claus, who, drawn a team of deer, drives over Arctic mountains, and through deep ravines till he reaches the children's home and deposits his load of Xmas gifts to the great delight of the recipients. The spectacle is sure to be a favourite with the young, whose delusion it will not dissipate, as well as with the adult, who can dream his young dreams again. During an interval the programme, Mr Mattie Cheshire gave humorous musical sketches.
