Quick-Firing Guns

The distinguishing features of these Breach-Loading Guns are convenience of handling and speed of firing.

On the occasion on which these pictures were taken the target represented a Torpedo Boat running at the rate of 23 miles per hour.

As an illustration of the accuracy and rapidity of their fire, it may be mentioned that the size of the target was 18 by 4 feet. Ten hits were made out of nineteen shells fired by four guns, and the time occupied was 26 seconds.

Battery of Quick-Firing Guns in Action

These great contrast between the old-fashioned artillery and the latest examples of engineering skill is well exemplified in this picture, which is probably the best ever taken of an artillery subject. Some half-a-dozen guns are seen on a gantry, built over the water. In the distance, a rapidly moving target is rushing through the sea. The officer in charge is watching it through his field glasses, an order is given, and the men rush out and man the guns, some feeding them with cartridges and others sighting and tiring at a tremendous rate, several of the shots hit the target. This very fine film concludes with a view of the target itself which shows the shots splashing through and round it, the latter part of the picture being taken at considerable risk from a small boat.
