Le chronophotographe de W. D. Slade (Victoria Hall, 11-14 août 1897)

William David Slade, marchand de chaussures à Cheltenham, qui s'intéresse depuis plusieurs années aux projections lumineuses, fait l'acquisition d'un chronophotographe Demenÿ, à la fin de l'année 1896, avec lequel il va organiser des séances de photographies animées. Il va faire équipe, jusqu'en juillet 1897, avec Walter Robert Booth, un prestidigitateur magicien et ventriloque. Cependant la séparation est déjà consommée et Slade, qui vient d'organiser seul quelques soirées à Swansea, se présente à Weston-super-Mare, pour quatre séances, du 11 au 14 août 1897, au cours desquelles, comme il se doit, ce sont les vues du Jubilé de la Reine qui sont le clou des projections animées :

Les moving photographs de David Devant (Victorial Hall, 1^er-2 décembre 1897)

Depuis le mois d'août 1896, David Devant, le célèbre magicien, a organisé une entreprise afin de distribuer et présenter des films en Grande-Bretagne. Il peut compter, à partir du milieu de l'année 1897 sur plusieurs collaborateurs dont son propre frère, Ernest Wighton. À Weston-super-Mare, même si le nom de Devant apparaît, c'est plutôt l'une de ses trois équipes qui tournent en Grande-Bretagne, qui est responsable du fonctionnement des deux soirées des 1^er et 2 décembre 1897 données au Victoria Hall :

En revanche, l'équipe qui les accompagne a déjà circulé en Grande-Bretagne : Horace Chester, représentant de David Devant, Mabel Grey, l'artiste et Walter R. Booth, le prestidigitateur magicien.

Les Edison's animated pictures d'H. Spencer Clarke (Knightstone Pavilion, 14->14 juillet 1902)

H. Spencer Clarke organise des séances cinématographiques depuis 1897. Au cours de l'année 1902, les séances sont assez épisodiques. À Weston-super-Mare, c'est au Knightstone Pavilion que des projections ont lieu, à partir du 14 juin 1902, parmi d'autres numéros de variétés :

KNIGHTSTONE PAVILION (Resident Manager, Mr. W. Payne; Acting-Manager, Mr. W.E. Boycott).-This week we have Edison's animated pictures, under the direction of Mr. H. Spencer Clarke, and on Monday evening a large attendance was attracted. In association therewith a capital variety entertainment is provided, which includes Carl Fredericks, chapeaugraphist, ventriloquist, and conjuror; Miss Gertrude Cordelia, kaleidoscopic dancer; Miss Nita Hunwick and Miss Doris Courteney, vocalist; and Miss Dodd, pianist.

EDISON'S ANIMATED PICTURES AT THE PAVILION
A capital programme is this week being provided at the Pavilion for residents and visitors, and those who wish to enjoy themselves in a congenial atmosphere will find the building very cool. The principal features at both the afternoon and evening performances are Edison’s animated pictures, exhibited under the direction of Mr. Spencer Clarke. The pictures are very distinct, and on Monday and Tuesday the audiences manifested their delight by rounds of hearty applause. The programme embraces a variety of subjects, but the items which are most heartily received are the return home of Lord Kitchener, the review of the Colonial troops, and the King’s procession on the opening of Parliament. The humorous element is also included, and no one can fail to be delighted with the pictures. The vocal efforts of Miss Doris Courteney and Miss Nita Hunwick are very pleasing, whilst the ventriloquial sketch by Mr. Carl Fredericks is decidedly clever and entertaining, as also are his humorous songs, and his chapeaugraphy, “Twenty faces under one hat.” The kaleidoscope dance by Miss Gertrude Cordelia was greeted with much applause, and was one of the most enjoyable items. The attendance at each entertainment is satisfactory.

Nous disposons, ici, de quelques nouvelles indications sur le titre des films : The Return Home of Lord Kitchener, The Review of the Colonial Troops et The King's Procession on the opening of Parliament. En revanche, il est assez délicat d'en connaître la provenance exacte.
