CINEMATOGRAPH IN THE TEMPERANCE HALL. On Wednesday and yesterday evenings excellent entertainments have been given in the Temperance Hall by Mr David Devant's animated photographs (from Maskelyne and Cooke's, London) to crowded and appreciative audiences. The cinematograph used is one of the most perfectly constructed instruments of its kind in existence. The jarring noise which generally accompanies entertainments of this kind has been done away with, and also the flashes of light which used so frequently to spoil what would otherwise have been very successful representations. An innovation is that of bringing into use stage effects. For instance, it is much more natural to hear a "bang" when you see a gun go off than to see the smoke disperse in silence. The most interesting subjects given are the dramatic scenes, "The death of Nelson," " King Charles's farewell to his family," "The Laboratory of Faust," &c. The "Laboratory of Faust" is an exceedingly clever achievement. The appearances and exits of the various persons taking part is most mysterious, and must be seen to be appreciated. Thanks to some excellent variety business, the entertainment never grows dull for a moment.
Merthyr Times, and Dowlais Times, and Aberdare Echo, 25 mars 1898, p. 6.

MERTHYR WAR MEMORIAL
CONCERT AT THE THEATRE ROYAL.
A specially attractive programme was arranged for the grand orchestral concert at the Theatre Royal last Sunday, when the combined bands of Messrs. Poole's, the Theatre Royal, and Mr. Gwilym Lewis's Orchestra took part with their respective leaders, Messrs. J. Brierlly. R. Watts, and Gwilym Lewis respectively. They played a splendid selection of music, and their performances were warmly applauded. Another great atraction was the myriograph, very kindly lent and operated by Messrs. Poole, the animated pictures being much admired. In addition several of our leading local vocalists gave their services, including Mr. David Jones (Dewi Canaid), Abercanaid; Mr. T. Thomas, Dowlais, tenor; Miss Tyfdil Brown, Dowlais; and Mrs. Polgraham, Merthyr. These were heartily thanked for their most excellent singing be the Chairman. Dr. Biddle, High Constable, and he also expressed the best thanks of the towns-people to Messrs Poole, Mr. Smithson, and Mr. Lewis for their valuable assistance in the concert. A collection was taken on behalf of the War Memorial Fund, and realised £12 0s. 6d. Mr. J. Carlyle Thomas superintended generally with the stage arrangements.
