MR. ARTHUR ROUSSEL, at present the general agent of the Eclectic Film Company, first started in the motion picture business as a boy with M. De Bedts in 1896 in Paris. Mr. De Bedts was one of the pioneer producers and manufacturers, and at the time that Mr. Roussel went with him, twenty-live feet of film taken at a street corner was considered the maximum length and was accepted as a great novelty in all the theaters. Mr. Roussel there got his grounding in the technical and mechanical end of the moving picture business. The methods were very crude and the production was not very large, and the future of the business seemed so uncertain that he left it to go into the manufacture of picture post cards and photo advertising.

In 1906 the moving picture business again attracted him, and he went with Pathe Freres, in Paris, in charge of the coloring department. At the time he went with Pathe all coloring was done by hand, but a very crude machine had just been introduced with which they were experimenting. Mr. Roussel perfected this machine to such an extent that he changed the production from a maximum of less than ten thousand feel per day to about one hundred thousand feet per day, and completely eliminated the hand coloring of the films.

When Pathe built a new factory in Vincennes, Mr. Roussel was placed in complete charge of the manufacturing, including the developing, printing and mounting. Here, he inaugurated several changes, notably in the method of washing the films, cutting down the time necessary from about an hour and a half to twenty minutes. This effected a great saving in time and enormously increased the out put.

The first American Pathe studio, built in 1909, consisted of an outdoor stage, with a small shack as a laboratory. It was located on the Plank Road in Jersey City New Jersey. In winter, the producing unit was moved to the old Edison Studio in New York, until construction was completed on a modern studio building at nº 1 Congress Sreet, Jersey Ciy.

Pathe Freres then took it over and remodeled it for a film printing laboratory and for the manufacture of raw cinematographic film. Up o that time, practically all of the raw film used by Pathe was imported from France, although some of it was purchased from Eastman Kodak Company.

When Pathe decided to open an American factory in 1907. Mr. Roussel was sent to America to build, equip and organize the plant in Bound Brook. N.J. Although handicapped by a total lack of English, he built and equipped the factory so it was a model for today. He remained in charge of the factory organization for about three years, when he was given control of the studio organization also. This placed him in charge both of the manufacturing and the production end-, making him completely familiar with the moving picture business from beginning to end.

The Moving Picture World, New York, April 11, 1914, p. 197

ARTHUR ROUSSEL DEAD.
