The Beggar's Deceit
In this photograpb- which may be described as a translation of a famous French film- a cripple is seen laboriously propelling himself along the pavement on a little trolley, as he has lost the use of his legs. In the distance a policeman is walking slowly up the street. Numerous passers-by, taking pity on the beggar's apparent plight, show their sympathy in a substantial manner, and the cripple appears to be reaping a good harvest, when the policeman comes up with him. The constable suspecting something wrong, taps the man on the shoulder, and the man being seized with a sudden fright, springs up and takes to his heels right down the street with marvellous rapidity. The policeman hardly expecting such a result to his enquiries, starts off in pursuit, but is handicapped at the commencement by falling heavily over the beggar's deserted trolley. He is a corpulent man, but he gets to his feet again with considerable agility, and tears off down the street after the retreating figure of the fraudulent beggar.
