Les origines (1847-1897)
Les deux frères Charles Poole (1821-1877) et George Walter Poole (1828-1877) se font connaître comme musiciens avant d'être remarqués par un impresario :
In 1837 George and Charles Poole were busking on the sands at Margate. They were excellent musicians, and their playing attracted the attention of a showman named Gompertz, who owned a travelling panorama.

How It Began
George and Charles Poole became Gompertz's partners, and ultimately his successors. The Pooles had a brother John, who was an agriculturist, and whose father had been one of the oldest burgesses of Malmesbury.

Leur autre frère, John Poole, est un agriculteur (recensement 1851) dont les cinq fils vont suivre, dès leur plus jeune âge, les traces de leurs oncles Charles et George qui exploitent un panorama. Du panorama, ils passent au diorama puis au "Myriorama" qui fait leur succès. La réalisation de ces peintures peut prendre plusieurs mois comme on peut le lire ci-après :
All the scenes were hand-produced, and some of the greatest scenic artists of the day painted them for Pooles. One, "The Halt by the Way of the Viceroy of India's State Elephants," took Sebastian Estolos 18 months to produce, and it cost Charles W. Poole £350. William Telbin got £150 for a picture of Edinburgh. Other great artists who painted for the firm were Arthur C. Rogers (of whom more anon), George Pontin (still a well-known Gloucester resident), Edgar Rogers and Charles Philips.

Dès le mois de décembre 1896, Charles W. Poole introduit dans ses spectacles de Myriorama, un nouvel appareil cinématographique, l'eventographe. Les projections sont assurée par Herbert Wyndham
Mr. Herbert Wyndham's eventographe was not the least appreciated feature amongst the varieties, the Diamond Jubilee procession occupying a prominent position. Throughout the whole of the entertainment the selections by the band—a most excellent body—enlivened the proceedings. The Myriorama will occupy the Theatre for the remainder of this week, when doubtless the entertainment will be as well patronised as it deserves.

POOLE'S AT THE ALBERT HALL
Poole's well-known myriorama and variety entertainment makes its ever-welcome appearance at Swansea for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The show is greater and grander than ever, and will be enjoyed by young and old of wahtever age. The entertainment opens on Christmas Day, when there will be two special performances, with sacred music. A special feature of this visit will be the up-to-date pictures on the Boer War, scenes from the beginning of the friction to the present time being supplied. Among the pictures will be found reproductions of the charge of the Dublin Fusiliers at Glencoe, and the splendid work of the Gordons, Devons, and Manchesters at Elands laagte. A splendid series of pictures are those of Mr. Cecil Rhodes' pet scheme, the route from Caito to the Cape. A beautiful series of views are those illustrative of the sacred solo. "Ora Pro Nobis, which has been described as the acme of dioramic art. Then there is the variety entertainment, which embraces some for the best music-hall artistes. There is also the Edison-Poole Eventographe, which will show pictures of the departure of General Buller from Southampton for South Africa. And to conclude, Mr. John R. Poole, the people's inimitable guide, humorist, etc., is also with us again, and under his direction a capital understanding of the views may be ensured. The prices of admission are 2s., 1s. 6d., 1s., and 6d.

For the Championship of the World, which took place at Coney Island, New York. on June 9th, 1899. 11 ROUNDS. Every blow and feint from beginning to finish. This is the only one in England, and the film alone cost Mr. Poole £250.
THE LUBIN CINEMATOSCOPE only arrived from America last week and will be found the most perfect Living Picture Machine yet invented. Eleven rounds, showing knock-out. 1.700 feet of the most brilliant set of Fight Films ever produced, clear, sharp, and distinct in detail. The Fight from start to finish is most realistic, true to nature and full of action. Those who object to Prize Fights need have no scruples about seeing these pictures. It will be a wonderful exhibition, showing the perfection to which animated photography has been brought. Go and see it and all prejudice will vanish. It has been patronised throughout the United States of America and Canada by all classes, including very many of the clergy, who were greatly pleased with this grand exhibition of science and skill. It is being able to protect himself with his fist that makes the Britisher so much feared by foreigners. They use revolvers and knives; an Englishman resents an insult to his wife, mother, daughter or country with his fist. To Please Everyone, Mr. Scott has arranged to give the entire Myriorama and Eventograph first, and to finish each performance with the Fitzsimmons v. Jeffries Fight, so that those who do not care for this class of entertainment can leave after seeing the usual full performance. No advance in the Prices, although this fight alone has never yet been exhibited under 1s. admission, the usual prices will be charged for Swansea. En 1902, il est question du cine-phono-matograph. James Scott apparaît également comme General Manager (novembre. Londres. Wimbledon).

A new departure has been made at the King's Theatre, Hammersmith Road, this week, a change from dramatic and musical plays being made by the first visit to the theatre of Mr. Charles W. Dès le début de l'année 1898, la famille Poole propose
Le nom myriograph est également utilisé par d'autres exploitants dont Gustave Roselle, Jaxon's myriograph
En 1900, la famille Poole dispose, en Grande-Bretagne et en Irlande, de sept spectacles qui tournent pendant une part importante de l'année. Les Myrioramas sont présentés avec d'autres numéros, des projections, des auditions, des vaudevilles...
En 1901 (et peut-être avant), le manager est Stewart Braide.

En 1909, les Poole ouvrent la première salle de cinéma à Ipswich.

Dès 1898, Charles W. Poole s'installe à Gloucester où il fait l'acquisition dla Methodist New Connexion Chapel (Worcester street) où vont être créés et exécutés de nombreux Myriorama jusqu'en 1928. Il achète également le Theatre Royal en 1903 qui devient le Gloucester Palace of Varieties (6 août 1906).

Charles Poole est impliqué dans l'entreprise familiale dès son plus jeune âge et il gère les Myriorama de ses oncles dont celui de H & F. Poole vers 1900.

The railway companies advertise various excursions for the Whitsuntide holidays.
THE THEATRE ROYAL.— At the Theatre Royal, Mr. Frank Lindo’s excellent domestic drama“ Home. Sweet Home” will be presented for the last time this (Saturday) evening.—On Thursday next the proprietors of the Theatre, C. W. and J. R. Poole, take their first benefit. Afternoon and evening performances will be given, and a capital programme is being arranged, a feature of which will be the exhibition of the animated pictures of the opening of the electric tramways secured by Mr. J. R. Poole on that occasion. Full details of the many attractions may be found the advertisement. We hope the Messrs. Poole will have a "bumping house."

L'un de leur grand succès est Loss of the Titanic (1912)
Charles Poole, au fil des ans, va ouvrir des salles de cinéma à Taunton et Teignmouth et, dans les années 1920-1930, il dirige l'Empire Cinema à Newton Abbot.
