Le Cinématographe (Old Masonic Hall, 13->13 février 1897)
Le Cinématographe s'installe au Old Masonic Hall à la mi-février :
The Cinematograph. — The wonderful adaptation of Edison's kinetoscope, which has been called the cinematograph, which has been called the cenematograph [sic], will be on exhibition, as advertisements have told our readers, at he Old Masonic Hall in High-street this evening and until further notice. This forenoon, a private view was given to a few gentlemen, who sere full of admiration of the marvel, although the daylight, which could not be wholly shut out, interfered somewhat with the sharpness of the outlines. There were shown Miss Sadie Macdonald and another dancer, street scenes in London and Moscow, a cockfight, the finish of the Melbourne Cup race, and the fighting kangaroo. The pictured dancers went throught all the movements of the performance, so that the spectators saw an exact copy of the original dances; in the town scenes vehicles moved into the street passed along and out of sight, as did pedestrians and cyclists; the cockfight and the kangaroo boxing match were exact reproductions in every movement of their originals; and in the racecourse view the space before the grandstand was at the outset seen covered with people; presently, as the horses came along, the course was cleared; the horses came in, a large cluster in the lead, and behind it the various stragglers; and then the crowd rushed across the course to see the winner. The definition of some of the scenes might, as has been stated, be improved; but probably at night this defect of imperfect definition will be removed.
