L'Edison Cinematographe de Frank St. Hill (Miners Institute, 22-23 janvier 1897)
Kalgoorlie. Miners Institute
Kalgoorlie Miner, Kalgoorlie, mardi 19 janvier 1897, p. 2.
There was a large attendance at the Miners’ Institute on Saturday evening to witness the Cinematographe. The loud applause which greeted the various pictures manifested the marked appreciation of the audience. The pictures which were received with most favor were Lewin and his performing dog. The life-like representation of the animal turning a double back somersault and the waiting for the order of his master were marvellous. The serpentine dance was a contribution which was re-demanded. The gyrations of the danseuse were so perfect, and even the folds in the draperies were so well brought out, that it was hard to realise the fact that it was but a picture. Several other representations were displayed on the screen. It was announced that it was the intention of the management to take views of the principal streets and houses at Kalgoorlie, also of the Great Boulder and other mines, to be produced by the aid of the cinematographe in London. Mr St Hill, the manager, has decided to visit the Miners’ Club at the Boulder on Wednesday evening, and give two exhibitions at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

OLDE ENGLISH FAYRE COMPANY.After a season at Coolgardie the Olde English Fayre Company will make its advent in this town at the Miners' Institute on Tuesday evening next. This variety combination is, judging by the way it has attracted public patronage elsewhere, a. very strong one, including artists of whom much that is favorable has been heard. With the company is Ouda, the famous gymnast, who is a show in himself. Regarding Lumiere's cinematographe, it will be a great draw, as the displays provided are a remarkably choice set.

Amusements
THE OLD ENGLISH FAIR COMPANY.
[...]
The entertainment concluded with an exhibition of the Lumiere cinematographe, entirely new scenes being depicted from those shown on the previous evening. The keen appreciation of the audience was demonstrated by their demand to have nearly every picture repeated. The most successful of the views were those relating to the movements of military troops, the arrival of a train, a game at escarte, and a scene in a swimming bath. The company give their third performance to-night, when new views will be exhibited by the Cinematographe.

The ninth National Sunday Entertainment is announced to be given at the Miners' Institute to-morrow night, commencing at half-past 8, when a programme or unusual excellence will be presented, the chief feature being the famous Lumiere cinematographe, through which a complete series of beautiful living pictures will be shown, amongst them being realistic views representing a visit in Hyde Park, London, the arrival of the express at Paris full of bustling passengers, who are seen leaving the carriage with bag and baggage, the 96th Regiment defiling, headed by their brass band, a skirmish and charge by the Cuirassiers, the 26th Dragoon Guards going through a jumping parade, Spanish artillery at gun practice, the hat trick, the diving champions, and others recently exhibited at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne, where they created a sensation by reason of their great beauty and realism.A cinematographe was first shown in Australia last October, and although it was an indifferent imitation of the real machine, it attracted considerable attention, but it was not until the Lumiere cinematographe made its appearance that the public fully realised to what great perfection the instrument could be brought, and the startling effects invented by the great Edison and perfected by the famous French electrician Lumiere, at once stamped it as one of the most surprising electrical triumphs of the century. Mr. Stuart says that the fees paid by Messrs Jones and Lawrence in connection with the cinematograph now being shown in Kalgoorlie amount to £130 per week, and the enterprise of these gentlemen in introducing such a costly attraction so far inland certainly deserves liberal support.

SUNDAY [B]ATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT.
A crowded house assembled at the Miners’ Institute last, night at the regular Sunday rational entertainment. The programme was provided by the Olde Englyshe Fayre Company and the Lumiere cinematographe, which were most successful in gaining approval. Miss Florence Neville, Miss Ida Holbein, Miss Emmie Smith, and Miss Madge Stacgpoole each earned and received liberal applause, and recalls were the order of the evening. The same was the case as regarded Messis Bob Bell, J. Mooney, and A. Mitchell. The marvellous cinematographe is now that it has come to be known; immensely popular here, and the picture shown last night were received with as much enthusiasm as wonderment from the house, which had no doubt been attracted for the most part by the promise of the cinematographe exhibition. The scenes shown included some that had been declared as most liked of those put on the screen during the week, including that more than popular one entitled “Diving Champions,” which was reversed at the demand of the audience, so that all the divers shot out of the water up to the springboards — a surpassing, in fact, of real nature by the machine. Once seeing of the cinematographe living pictures does not suffice, nor can one cease at all in marvelling at the representations. The last exhibition will be given to-night, in connection with the Faye Company's performance, and a complete change of pictures is promised.
