Le Cinématographe de J. R. Smythe (Prohibition Hall, 21->21 novembre 1896)
J. R. Smythe présente un "cinematograph" en novembre :

Un bref article, publié deux jours plus tard, donne quelques informations complémentaires.
The Cinematographe.
This evening local residents will have an opportunity of seeing one of Edison's latest wonders, the cinematographe, which will be on view at the Prohibition Ball. Views are projected on a screen and the movements are reproduced with lifelike fidelity. For instance, if the arrival of a train is shown, the engine can he seen approaching the station, the doors are thrown open, the people alight, and the station is in a few minutes a scene of bustling activity.
Goulburn Evening Penny Post, Goulburn, samedi 21 novembre 1896, p. 2.
Pourtant, des problèmes d'énergie vont perturber ces projections :
THE CINEMATOGRAPHE
WAS exhibited in Goulburn on Saturday, but owing to a hitch in obtaining the necessary gas-power the Co. was unable to give more than one display. We learn that the defect has now been remedied, and exhibitions will be given to-night at 8 and 9 o'clock. We advise all those who have not seen the pictures shown by this machine to take the earliest opportunity of doing so, as judging from the reports that reach us, the cinematographe is one of the most marvellous inventions of the century.

Un autre journal offre un compte rendu plus précis :
The Cinematographe.
THE cinematographe was shown for the first time in Goulburn on Saturday evening, in the Prohibition Hall, but unfortunately the apparatus was not in the best workin order, and the pictures did not come out as distinctly as they should. the possibilities of the machine were, however, illustrated. A railway scene, a market scene, a boxing match, a cock fight, several dances, &c., were presented, and it was made apparent that under satisfactory conditions a splendid entertainment could be provided by the cinematographe. The proprietors were so dissatisfied on Saturday evening that they only gave one exhibition. We understand that the cause of the defect was in the light supply. The apparatus is now working more satisfactorily. As will be seen by advertisement, the Goulburn public will be afforded further opportunities this week of seeing this wonder.

Cinematographe.
THE Lumiere cinematographe, exhibited by Messrs. Pursehouse and Pettitt on Saturday and Monday evenings, was well patronized, and the views gave great pleasure. A fine collection of pictures was shown, including views of the Jubilee procession, the arrival of a train, a French duel, a skating act, a snowballing scene, and many others. The instrument is a first-classe one.
