Southern Pacific Overland Mail

Taken on the line of the N.P.R.R., between Portland and Beatty on its journey of 2,000 miles to St. Paul. This train was made up of two baggage cars, one mail car and nine passenger coaches, a total of twelve cars. It is the fastest and best train crossing the continent and the view we have is most striking. The picture was taken in a valley and the hills formed a sharp background. The high waving grass alongside the train stands out sharp and clear, while a number of people, including some ladies standing on the side of the track add to its realism. The train moves at a high rate of speed and the dust and smoke effects are vivid. The picture is sharp and clear, all tending to make one of the best train scenes ever photographed.
