NEWCASTLE TEMPERANCE FESTIVAL
ALD. STEPHENS AND THE SHOWS.
In threatening weather, the seventeenth annual Temperance Festival was inaugurated on the Town Moor on Tuesday, and continued on Wednesday and Thursday, the attendance on the several days being very large. In almost every respect the festival was identical with those held in previous years. There was the customary collection of roundabouts, swings, shooting galleries, and shows of various kinds, whilst the inevitable "Cheap Jack" appeared, as in the past, to be doing a flourishing trade. The great attraction was the military sports, where the largest crowd collected. The stands, however, for which a charge was made, were not so well filled as they might have been, considering the excellent sport provided. These was every sign that in spite of the ominous clouds which remained hanging overhead during the entire afternoon, that the huge throng found in the festival a considerable amount of enjoyment.
