THE AVENUE THEATRE.
The greater part of the entertainment at the Avenue Theatre this week taken up by two of Mr. John Lawson's own dramatic productions, and they and the variety artists' performances were last night witnessed by large audience. That thrilling act " Humanity" was one of the little plays produced, and the dramatic interest was as well maintained as ever, while the house wrecking struggle that leads to the final lost none of its excitement in last night's performance. The mounting was magnificent and the acting creditable to Mr Lawson and his company, Mrs Lawson, Miss Marian Rebecca Hood, Mr F. Bailey, Mr E. S. Vincent, and Mr J. S. Boom St. Joseph. The other production by these artists was "Sally in our Alley," a short play which certainly justifies the word "daring" applied to it on the playbills. Entertaining variety turns were also supplied by Witty Watty Walton, the comedian who made himself famous as the " Lady Slavey" bailiff, and who has a budget of funniosities ; Ben Nevis, another comedian who is clever in his line of business; Cissie Russell, a soubrette with charming dancing qualities; Leslie H. Murray, an astonishing magician and card manipulator, and Downey's living pictures, which include cinematographic views of the Newcastle Exchange Walking Contest, the arrival of Mr Chamberlain after his colonial tour, the launch of Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock III, and several comic sets.

Les Living Pictures de Frederick Downey (Avenue Theatre, 17 février 1904)
Frederick Downey présente des vues animées à l'occasion du Charity Carnival en février :
THE CHARITY CARNIVAL
A Great Success.
The wisdom of the change made a few years ago when it was decided to hold the annual charity carnival promoted by the pantomimists, press, publicans, and police indoors instead of in the open was illustrated yesterday afternoon. Despite the bad weather another effort made on behalf of the local charities was highly successful, and it will admitted at once that it could not have been so had it been devoted to outdoor sports such as formed the initial carnivals, which though very enjoyable when the weather was favourable, were too often spoiled by wretched meteorological conditions. As usual in the fore part of yesterday the Amalgamated Musicians' Union Band went round the town in a brake playing selections, and drawing attention to the carnival. The comedians set out on a busking expedition, and they and a number of ladies with boxes managed to collect a considerable sum for the funds, for fortunately during these outdoor preliminaries the weather was not so bad as in the afternoon when the carnival took place the Avenue Theatre, kindly lent for the occasion by Mr C. E. Machin. [...] A display of Downey's living pictures was also given.
