Cinematograph Films.
In this column will appear, from time to time, descriptions of cinematograph films as seen on the screen by our representatives.
SWITZERLAND : AN ASCENT OF THE JUNGFRAU.
Warwick Trading Co. Ltd.
A series of films taken during a difficult and dangerous ascent of the Jungfrau, showing views of the climbers at an height of over 13,000 feet. The party consisted of Messrs. Charles Urban, G. A. Smith, F. Ormiston Smith, the latter being the well-known mountaineer who has made a speciality of photography at high altitudes, and the two famous Bernese Oberland guides, Christian Bergenes and Hans Bernet. The following briefly indicates the incidents of each film, the whole series forming a grand conception of mountain climbing and its attendant difficulties and dangers :—The last drink before leaving the Chalet- previous to the start; Climbing the Jungfrau—ascending the Gaggi Glacier, crevasses, slide, etc. ; Climbing the Wetterhorn—difficult rock and precipice scaling ; Climbing the Jungfrau—difficult ice and snow traversing, a slip, reaching summit; A lunch on the mountain and return of the climbers.

The Showman, Londres, vendredi 15 novembre 1901, p. 10.

On September 28th, 1903, the Urban Mountaineering Expedition left Zermatt to attempt the conquest of the most famous Mountain in the World, and at mid-day, on the 29th that conquest was completed by the bioscoping of the marvellous panorama from the actual summit of the Matterhorn, 14,780 feet above the level of the sea.
Christian Burgener, the leading guide of the Expedition, is one of the best men in the Alps, with him were the well- known Zermatt Guides, Gabriel Zumtaugwald, Joseph Taugwalder, Peter Perren, and Felix Julen.
Herr Dethleffsen of Berne, accompanied the Expedition, together with the porters who carried the apparatus and provisions, while the organizing and photographing were carried out by Mr. F. Ormiston-Smith, the eminent mountaineering photographer.
The following series of pictures which illustrate the entire ascent of the Matterhorn, are probably the most wonderful bioscopic pictures ever taken in the face of tremendous difficulty and danger.
Such renowned portions of the mountain, as the Old Cabane (the scene of Mr. Whymper's first exploits); the Shoulder (where four of the first party who ever trod the summit, met their deaths during the descent;, and the marvellous summit ridge and incomparable panorama arc included ; so that, the result of this Bioscope ascent is likely to rival in interest the famous ascent of 1865, when all the World rang with the news of the conquest of the, Matterhorn, and its terrible vengeance.p. 52-53.

Dans son catalogue de février 1905, la Charles Urban Trading Company propose une nouvelle série de vues animées également tournées par Frank Ormiston Franck, The Payground of Europe. Parmi les films, on trouve Capt. Spelterini's Balloon Trip Across the Jungfrau.

Ballooning Among the Moutains: Signor Speltarini's Attempt to Cross the Alps
Signor Spelterini, in his attempt to cross the Alps in a balloon, made his ascent from the Eiger Glacier Station on the Jungfrau Railway. The balloon crossed the Jungfrau towards Valais, but was then driven back into The Berne Canton, and a landing had to be effected on the Engstligen Alp. near Adelboden. Captain Spelterini had splendid weather, and was able to photograph the Jungfrau Group —the Blumlisalp, the Breithorn. and the Wildstruhel. A thick fog afterwards prevented him from taking his bearings. The maximum height reached was 20,000 ft., the temperature being then 9deg. below freezing point.
Our photographs are by Ormiston Smith Brothers, Grindelwald.

THE URBANORA
Permanent Picture Show at the Alhambra.
[...]
Then after are promised [...] "Dangers of Alpine Climbing" [...] "Through Palestine and the Holy Land".

Music Hall and Theatre Review, Londres, vendrei 16 décembre 1904, p. 10.

Conventry Herald, Conventry, vendredi 11 octobre 1907, p. 1.

A lecture on any form of sport always finds a sympathetic audience in this country. “Mountaineering'’ is the sport of which Mr. Frank Ormiston-Smith has to tell in his lecture, and with the aid of a series of moving pictures shown by his brother, Mr. C. Orrmirston-Smith, it is said that its perils and possibilities are realized by the audience with a vividness that is thrilling.

Cork Examiner, Cork, samedi 25 septembre 1909, p. 10.

A WORLD OF SNOW.—On Wednesday next, Mr. Frank Ormiston Smith wills lecture at the Winchmore Hill Literary Society on "A month above the Snow Line." This is a lecture dealing with the experiences of a climber who, desirous of returning to the ways of Alpine Pioneers, set out upon a journey across the Alps from end to end, following in the footsteps of Sir William Martin Conway. Leaving Bad Gastein, 200 miles west of Vienna, early in September last, Mr. Ormiston Smith and his guides successfully carried out the first portion of this thousand-mile journey over the roof of Europe, of which this lecture is the result. A particularly fine series of living pictures was secured of all the interesting incidents connected with this original journey, such unique opportunities offering that drifting clouds, cloud panoramas, and sunrise effects were caught by the kinematograph. and so impressive are the results that at their first exhibition in London they were pronounced as being the finest specimens of motion photography ever seen.

Middlesex Gazette (Southgate Edition), samedi 26 février 1910, p. 5.

Other Attractions. Among other attractions in the present week's programme may be mentioned the appearance of Mr. Fred Chester. the well-known entertainer, who will be seen at the concert this evening and again to-morrow evening. This evening (Friday) at 8. Mr. C. Ormiston Smith will deliver his popular bioscope entertainment. " Mountaineering," and to morrow (Saturday) a special vocal recital will be given by Miss Elizabeth Munthe Kaas, the well-known Norwegian soprano.
