Pie eating Competition

In a country market-place a voluble quack is extolling his marvelous pills, and, to attract attention, he announces a pie-cating competition for a Gold Medal. Two boys, nicely dressed in clean whites, volunteer to participate, under the impression that they are simply going to have a good tuck-in of fruit pie. This, however, is not what quite happens, for they are fed in a rather rough and ready manner by two seconds, who seem to find the proceedings vastly amusing; they soon discard the spoons provided, and cram the luscious blackberry pie into the boys ’mouths with their hands -one of them finally tilling the head of his champion back and pouring the remaining contents of the dish down his throat, with disastrous results for the lad’s nice clean cricketing shirt, not to speak of his face. Nevertheless, this move decides the contest, the medal is awarded, and both conqueror and conquered stand up to bow to the audience presenting a most ludicrous spectacle. Always received with shouts of laughter. Quality excellent.
