George, Henry Chard est un electricen qui réside à Londres (recensement 1891). Son frère Charles est compositeur. En 1896, George Chard dépose un brevet (nº 17848. 12 août 1896) pour un appareil cinématographique, cosigné par Julius Perchek et Hermann Ackermann. Cet appareil est connu sous le nom de Vitagraph que Chard va utiliser pour des projections cinématographiques en Grande-Bretagne. C'est le cas à Birkenhead :

This is the Vitagraph, aptly described as the photo-electric sensation of the age. Those who have not yet had the privilege of seeing animated photographs will be thrusting away an opportunity of looking upon this enjoyable scientific perfection if they fail to visit the Argyle this week. The scenes depicted, the exactitude with which they are carried through, and the clearness of the views are such as to call for unstinted praise, and it may be mentioned that in order to render the exhibition still more successful, an installation of electric light has been put into the building, with the result anticipated. On Monday night and last evening the theatre was crowded from floor to ceiling, and the proprietors of the Vitagraph. Messrs. Chard and Company, were vociferously applauded.

Les vues présentées par le Vitagraph font partie, pour une bonne part, du répertoire d'A. Esmé Collings. C'est en mars 1897 que Charles Chard va constituer la société "Chard's Vitagraph, Limited" :

CHARD'S VITAGRAPH, LIMITED.
Registered March 16, by R. McO, Inglis, 40, Palace-street, Buckingham-gate, S.W., with a capital of £1,500 in £1 shares. Object, to acquire and carry on the business of patentees, manufacturers, and exhibitors of apparatus for taking and producing animated photographs carried on at 8, Great Portland-street, S.W., as G. H. Chard, and to enter into a certain agreement. Registered without articles of association.

L'entreprise va poursuivre ses activités au cours des mois suivants avec des présentations de vues en Angleterre. Elle est encore active en 1898, puis disparaît par la suite. George Chard dépose un brevet, en 1900, pour "improvements in lamp holder switches for electric lighting". Il est recensé en 1901 à Londres avec son épouse et sa fille, puis il réside en 1911 avec son épouse et ses deux fils. Par la suite, George Chard vit à Londres (recensement 1921), puis à Egham (recensement 1938).

George Chard décède en 1944.
