Chicago Will Try to Outdo Denver Fire Department by Making Exhibition Run.

CHICAGO. Jan. 23.—Fire Chief W. H. Musham has decided that Chicago’s department shall compete with Fire Chief William Roberts’ department of Denver for the honor of running for the greatest fire run motion picture ever made. January 7th the Chicago department gave a ball at the Coliseum, and during the evening the Selig Polyscope company showed a number of moving views of the department that took the audience by storm. Most of the pictures were made by Thomas Nash of this city and H. H. Buckwalter of Denver. After the Chicago pictures had been shown the Seventeenth street run of the Denver department was thrown on the screen with the accompaniment of bells, gongs and clappers of various sorts. The effect on the audience was wonderful. Chief Musham decided that Chicago’s crack department had been outdone, and he at once made arrangements to make a great fire run on Michigan avenue early in March after the weather settles. With the exception of the emergency apparatus all of the Chicago department will be out, and the run wilt be made with three or four pieces of apparatus running abreast, with smoke and fire flying from the steamers, and the men not only in service costume, but every man busy dressing or otherwise keeping up motion. By bunching up the apparatus the run will be made in about ten or twelve minutes, and immediately after the different pieces of apparatus pass the camera they will be hurried to their several stations to relieve the emergency apparatus and men who will respond to any alarms should any come in. The idea Is that a picture of this sort will give the city a vast amount of good advertising not only in this country, but abroad and at the St. Louis fair, where hundreds of thousands of foreigners will see it and compare modern American methods with the antiquated European tactics and apparatus.
