MAYOR'S GARDEN PARTY AT SOUTH SHIELDS.
The Mayor and Mayoress of South Shields (Alderman and Mrs J. R. Lawson), gave a garden party in the South Marine Park yesterday. Favoured by splendid weather, the function proved an entire success, a large and representative gathering of people spending several hours of unalloyed pleasure in charming surroundings. At three o'clock the visitors, some walking others driving, began to arrive, and entered the park by the middle gates in Seafield Terrace. In a cool white tent, pitched on the lower level of the park, made beautiful by plants and flowers, and rendered imposing by the fine evergreen arch, by which it was confronted, stood the genial Mayor and the graceful partner of his duties and responsibilities, who with the utmost heartiness welcomed their visitors one by one, and by their tact and kindliness made everyone feel quite at home.
Passing out of the reception tent the guests assembled in groups on the green sward to converse with one another, or wandered about the park, the natural beauties of which seemed even more striking usual. The trees and flowers were in beautiful condition, and the newly mown lawns and trim paths in the very best of order. From the immediate surroundings of the park the eyes of most observers wandered over the German Ocean lying still and blue under a cloudless sky, and everyone felt that a more charming scene on a brighter day could not have been desired for a popular Mayor's outing. The dresses of the ladies were, of course, a contributing factor to the attractiveness of the scene, though the prevalence of half mourning was very noticeable, and showed that the memory of our late beloved Queen is still cherished the people's hearts.
The South Shields Police Band, conducted by Mr Sewell, occupied a stand in the centre of the large lawn, and played a number of popular selections, which were very well executed. At another point J. W. Delmar's Pierrots were stationed, and by their songs and funniosities afforded a good deal of pleasure and amusement. Mr Chas. E. Colby and Miss Alice Way, ventriloquists, and Miss Rosie Eaton also entertained visitors at intervals. An animated photograph was taken by the Messrs Downey. A very large marquee was erected for the refreshments, a department which was in the competent hands of Mr Meng, of Sunderland. Tea was also served at little tables arranged in a convenient part of the lawn.
