Fils d'un pasteur méthodiste (Free Methodist Connexion), Ernest Howard perd ses parents à l'âge de quatre ans. Il est adopté par George Henry Turner (recensement de 1881) et fait ses études au Butcher Landshville College (Pannal).

The "Walker, Turner, Dawson & Howard ([1900]-1903)

The Walturdaw Co. (1904-1910)

La société Walturdaw Co. est fondée en août 1904 selon ce que rapporte Edward G. Turner dans ses mémoires :

Here we were joined by Ernest Howard, and as the name of Walker, Turner, Dawson, and Howard was cumbersome, we coined the word "Walturdaw," taking the first three letters of the names of the first three members of the company. Up to August, 1904, we worked in partnership, but in this month, we formed into a limited liability company, each of the partners agreeing to serve the new company for ten years.

The trade generally will be sorry to hear that Mr. Howard, of this company, has been away from business for some time with quinsy. He is reported to be mending, however, and we wish him a speedy return to his customary activity. The misfortune was all the greatest, coming as it did when the busy season has well set' in. Walturdaw, Ltd., are revelling in orders just now. As soon as a film is joined up of any of their best subjects it has to be sent off to a customer. They have sold over 50 of the Bulldog film, although it has been on the market for barely a fortnight, while " Bird-nesting " and "Murphy's Wake" are still going merrily. Those who have seen these three subjects will realise that they are likely to rank among the best sellers for a long time, while, though prophecy is a dangerous thing, we are willing to undertake that the Zoo series will equal if it does not surpasse them all in popularity. The Optical Lantern and Kinematograph Journal, lundi 15 octobre 1906, p. 237.

Walturdaw.
Calling at this firm's premises during the week we were just in time to sec Mr. Howard, who is lately back from a business trip to Switzerland with a fine batch of snow pictures, which the firm are issuing this week. Mr. Howard timed his visit well, and was able to secure a picture of the opening of the Grand Curling Bonspiel at Celarina by the Crown Prince of Austria, and a number of views of the actual contest, in which players from all parts of the world participate. A capital portrait view of the Crown Prince is included in the film. There are two other subjects of equally good photographic quality. Bob Sleighing at St. Moritz is a capital illustration of an enlivening sport, and the Ice Gymkhana at Villars is also a delightfully clear and pretty picture which illustrates a tug-of-war on skates between military and civilians, a ladies' tug-of-war, a childrens' race, and a snowball combat. Nothing, to our mind, is prettier than a well-taken snow-scene, and these are photographically excellent, while the scenery is beautiful throughout. The various scenes may be obtained in one film or separately, and it may be mentioned that they are being shown at the Palace Theatre. The kinematograph and Lantern Weekly, Londres, 5 mars 1908, p. 310.

En 1910, il se sépare de la Walturdaw.
