L'eidoloscope (21 novembre 1896)
AT THE THEATER.
Miss Rosabel Morrison to Make Her Bow in Carmen To-day.
Miss Rosabel Morrison will make her first appearance in Savannah this afternoon and to-night in dramatized Carmen. No play of recent years has attracted so much favorable comment as this story of the Spanish gipsy. Originally made familiar through the medium of Bizet’s famous opera of the same name, its dramatic interest has been intensified in the form of a play. In the production in this city Miss Morrison assumes the title part. She is eminently fitted for the role, being in appearance the exact counterpart of Merimee’s heroine. Her supporting company is headed by Edward Elsner, an actor of wide experience. The production is mounted with great care and a great novelty is the introduction of the celebrated Eidoloscope, with which the bull fight is given in exact reproduction of the genuine event. It lasts fifteen minutes. The scenery of the play is said to be exceptionally fine. The view of the city of Seville shown in the first act is painted from drawings made by Senor Lucas Navarro, the famous Spanish artist. It shows a view of the Giralda tower, which can be seen from any part of the city, and from which was modelled the Madison Square tower in New York. A view of the bull ring in the city of Cordova, the ancient Moorish stronghold, is also shown. It was in this city that the national sport received its greatest encouragement from the Hidalgos.
