The scene represented was a blacksmith's forge, with three men alternately hammering the white hot metal, passing the bottle from hand to hand, drinking from it and then resuming their toil at the smithy-all done with amazing quickness, naturalness, and truth. The very sparks from the forge could be seen tying. To the observer the first thought was: "This is Nature," and the second, "How did even 'Wizard' Edison succeed in putting real life so perfectly and truthfully in any piece of mechanism, however intricate?"

The Standard Union, New York (Brooklyn), mercredi 10 mai 1893, p. 1.

The picture represented a blacksmith and two helpers forging a piece of iron. Before beginning the job a bottle was passed from one to the other, each imbibing his portion. The blacksmith then removed his white hot iron from the forge with a pair of tongs and gave directions to his helpers with the small hand hammer, when they immediately began to pound the hot iron while the sparks flew in all directions, the blacksmith at the same time making intermediate strokes with his hand hammer. At a signal from the smith, the helpers put down their sledge hammers, when the iron was returned to the forge and another piece substituted for it, and the operation was repeated.

The Photographic news, 16 juin 1893, p. 378.
The scene represented three men in a forge hammering a piece of red-hot iron. The picture was so perfect in action, perspective ans proportion, that it was exactly the same as if the scene was witnessed through a camera obscura. Every action of the men was shown. One suddenly threw down his hammer and motioned toward a bottle of lager beer on the ground. This was handed to him by one of the other men. He lifted it to his mouth and took a long drink and, after banding it to the second man, spat on his hands and grabbed his hammer, beginning to pound the iron on the anvil with renewed strength. The smoke from the forge rose steadily into the air in curves and circles, and the sparks from the anvil flew in all directions.
Mr. Edison said that the photographs of this scene were taken at the rate of forty-six a second, by a series of cameras, and that there were one thousand of them in the machine, which will only operate when a nickel is put into the slot. When a phonograph is attached, giving the sounds from the hammering as well as the talk of the men, the instrument is called the kinetograph, but when it is shown without the phonograph it is called the kintoscope [sic]. Mr. Edison, who calls the machine "a sure winner," says that any kind of scene may be represented-a prize-fight, a horse race, a diver under water, a yacht race, etc.
